Filmed in January 2021, the documentary was inspired by an article written by Coindesk columnist, Leah Callon-Butler, who is also the screenwriter and narrator of Play-to-Earn. The original article tells the story of a young family in Nueva Ecija, a rural province north of Manila, that took it in shifts to play the NFT-based game Axie Infinity up to 20 hours per day.
Play-to-Earn demonstrates how emerging technologies, such as non fungible tokens (NFTs) and cryptocurrencies, are providing transformative economic opportunities for people young and old, especially in developing nations where jobs are lacking and crisis relief has been limited.
