A short recap (3 minutes) of the documentary “PLAY-TO-EARN: NFT Gaming in the Philippines” was prepared and debuted on Coindesk TV on May 27, 2021 for the Community Crypto show. Hosted by Isaiah Jackson, Community Crypto takes a look at how crypto is creating and impacting various communities around the world.
The extended documentary (18 minutes) was filmed in January 2021, was a follow up to an article written by Coindesk columnist, Leah Callon-Butler. The original article tells the story of a young family in Nueva Ecija, a rural province north of Manila, that took it in shifts to play the NFT-based game Axie Infinity up to 20 hours per day.
Play-to-Earn demonstrates how emerging technologies, such as non fungible tokens (NFTs) and cryptocurrencies, are providing transformative economic opportunities for people young and old, especially in developing nations where jobs are lacking and crisis relief has been limited.
